Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in Inaugural Address
During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his administration.
An Unprecedented Leader
The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing Political Dynamics
The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past social media posts.
Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
